  2. and evangelical Christian sects that practise
  3. baptism by immersion only upon profession of
  4. faith. Baptists seek their authority in the
  5. Bible. Baptism originated among English
  6. Dissenters who took refuge in the Netherlands
  7. in the early 17th century, and spread by
  8. emigration and, later, missionary activity.
  9. Of the world total of approximately 31
  10. million, some 26.5 million are in the USA and
  11. 265,000 in the UK. The first Baptist church
  12. in America was organized in Rhode Island
  13. 1639. The Baptist Missionary Society, formed
  14. 1792, pioneered the 19th-century missionary
  15. movement which spread Baptism through Europe
  16. and to British colonies. In 1905 the Baptist
  17. World Alliance was formed.
